XRP Tests Critical $1 Support as Investors Await Key Regulatory and Market Catalysts

XRP has come under renewed selling pressure in recent days, slipping below the $1 support level twice within a five-day period. The cryptocurrency touched a 52-week low of $0.9915 on August 11 before briefly falling below $1 again on August 14. Although buyers managed to push the token back above the psychological threshold each time, the repeated tests have raised questions about where XRP could be headed next.

The digital asset is currently trading nearly 46% below its January 1 price of $1.88, highlighting the sharp correction that has unfolded this year.

XRP's History Below the $1 Mark

The last prolonged break below $1 occurred in late 2021. After fluctuating between $0.90 and $1.30 during much of that year, XRP closed below the key level in November as weakness spread across the broader cryptocurrency market.

At the time, Ripple was battling the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in a high-profile lawsuit filed in December 2020. Regulatory uncertainty led several cryptocurrency exchanges to suspend or delist XRP, while many institutional investors stayed on the sidelines.

The downturn intensified during 2022 as the collapse of the Terra/Luna ecosystem and the bankruptcy of FTX sent shockwaves throughout the crypto industry. XRP eventually dropped to around $0.29 before beginning a gradual recovery.

Throughout 2023 and most of 2024, the token made several attempts to reclaim the $1 level but repeatedly failed to maintain momentum.

That changed in November 2024, when XRP climbed back above $1 amid renewed optimism following Donald Trump's presidential election victory. The rally accelerated over the following months, eventually sending XRP to an all-time high of $3.65 before broader market weakness erased much of those gains.

Regulatory Clarity Remains a Major Catalyst

Many analysts continue to view regulatory developments as the single most important driver of XRP's long-term performance.

One proposal receiving significant attention is the CLARITY Act, legislation designed to provide a clearer regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States.

After advancing through the Senate Banking Committee earlier this year, XRP rallied above $1.50 before investors began taking profits. The bill has since stalled in the Senate, although a procedural vote is scheduled for September 15, when lawmakers will decide whether to move the legislation toward a full Senate vote.

Market observers believe a favorable outcome could significantly improve investor confidence, potentially helping XRP regain momentum. Some analysts suggest the token could revisit the $1.50 area in the short term, with additional upside possible if comprehensive regulatory legislation is ultimately approved.

Ripple Continues Expanding Its Global Payments Business

While XRP's price has struggled, Ripple has continued expanding its international payments network.

The company has announced partnerships with several major financial institutions and has secured important regulatory licenses across Europe, allowing it to offer payment services throughout the European Economic Area under a unified regulatory framework.

Although these business developments have not immediately translated into higher XRP prices, supporters argue they strengthen Ripple's long-term position and could become more meaningful if regulatory uncertainty surrounding digital assets continues to decline.

Institutional Interest Through XRP ETFs

Another factor investors continue to monitor is institutional demand through exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Since their launch in late 2025, XRP ETFs have attracted more than $1.5 billion in cumulative inflows, demonstrating continued interest from institutional investors.

However, new investment has slowed considerably in recent months. August inflows have remained modest compared with earlier this year, suggesting investors are waiting for stronger market catalysts before increasing exposure.

A renewed pickup in ETF demand could reduce available supply and provide additional support for XRP's price.

What Happens If XRP Loses $1?

The $1 level remains one of the most important technical support zones for XRP.

If buyers fail to defend that threshold and broader market conditions remain weak, analysts believe XRP could decline into a range between $0.80 and $0.95 in the near term. Should selling pressure intensify further without a meaningful recovery, prices could eventually approach $0.70.

On the other hand, many market participants believe a prolonged return to the multi-year sub-$1 trading range seen after 2021 appears less likely. Such a scenario would likely require a sustained cryptocurrency bear market, weakening fundamentals for Ripple's global payments business, and the disappearance of several regulatory catalysts that investors continue to monitor closely.

For now, XRP remains at a critical crossroads, with its next major move likely to depend on a combination of regulatory progress, institutional demand, and overall sentiment across the cryptocurrency market.
