Aliyah Boston Becomes Part-Owner of Boston Legacy FC as City Honors Her with "Aliyah Boston Day"
BOSTON — At just 23, Aliyah Boston already boasts an impressive résumé: standout at Worcester Academy, 2022 NCAA champion with South Carolina, 2023 WNBA Rookie of the Year, and four-time WNBA All-Star. Now, she adds another title: part-owner of the NWSL expansion team, Boston Legacy FC.
The announcement was made Monday, as Boston joined a high-profile investor group that includes Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman, Boston Celtics GM Brad Stevens and his wife Tracy, and Massachusetts-born actress Elizabeth Banks.
"I'm proud to join the Boston Legacy ownership group," said Boston. "This city helped raise me, and the support I felt here shaped who I am. I'm excited to invest in a franchise building something special — for its players, for the city, and for women's sports overall. And yes... Boston repping Boston just felt right!"
Born in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Boston moved to Boston at age 12 to live with her aunt and pursue basketball. At Worcester Academy, she averaged 17.3 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game, leading the Hilltoppers to back-to-back NEPSAC titles in 2018 and 2019. She was named Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year three years in a row and had her No. 00 jersey retired by the school in December 2024.
She was a top recruit for coach Dawn Staley at the University of South Carolina, where she helped lead the Gamecocks to a national title in 2022, earning both the AP and Naismith Player of the Year honors.
Selected No. 1 overall in the 2023 WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever, Boston averaged 14.5 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game while leading the league in field goal percentage (57.8%) — earning her Rookie of the Year honors.
The announcement comes just before the City of Boston celebrates “Aliyah Boston Day” on Tuesday, as she and the Indiana Fever take on the Connecticut Sun at TD Garden. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN, with limited tickets still available on StubHub.
“Aliyah’s investment in our club shows the strength of women’s sports, as both the WNBA and NWSL continue to grow,” said Legacy principal owner Jennifer Epstein. “She’s a proven winner who understands what it takes to build a championship team, and her perspective as an athlete is invaluable.”
Boston joins fellow WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu (Bay FC) as an NWSL team investor. Other basketball greats involved in women’s soccer ownership include Candace Parker (Angel City FC), Sue Bird (Gotham FC), and Angel Reese (DC Power FC in the USL Super League).
The announcement also follows Boston Legacy FC’s second-ever signing: Malian forward Aïssata Traoré, on loan from French club FC Fleury 91. Traoré is the first Malian player to sign with an NWSL team and is currently competing in the 2025 Women’s African Cup of Nations, where she recently scored in a 1–1 draw against Ghana.
Boston and the Fever are set to tip off against the Sun at 8 p.m. Tuesday in front of a likely sold-out crowd at TD Garden.
