Wisconsin health officials have confirmed a new case of measles in Chippewa County, marking the latest county to report an infection as the state's outbreak continues to expand.

The newly reported case, announced on Sept. 22, follows recent confirmations in Vernon and Marathon counties. Most of Wisconsin's infections remain linked to an ongoing outbreak centered in Grant, Iowa and Lafayette counties, where more than 160 cases have already been identified.

At this time, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) said it has not identified any public locations where the Chippewa County resident may have unknowingly exposed others.

Wisconsin has now recorded more than 170 measles cases in 2026, while the United States has reported over 3,400 cases nationwide, according to public health officials.

Measles is one of the most contagious viral diseases and spreads rapidly among people who are unvaccinated or lack immunity from a previous infection.

Stephanie Schauer, manager of Wisconsin's Immunization Program, said one of the recently reported cases in Vernon County is believed to be connected to the broader outbreak affecting southwestern Wisconsin. Officials have not disclosed how the Chippewa County resident contracted the virus.

Recognizing Measles Symptoms

Measles symptoms typically appear seven to 14 days after exposure and usually begin with:

• High fever

• Persistent cough

• Runny nose

• Red, watery eyes

Several days later, a red rash usually develops on the face near the hairline before spreading across the rest of the body. Some patients also develop small white spots inside the mouth, commonly known as Koplik spots.

Health officials advise anyone who suspects they may have measles to avoid contact with others and call a healthcare provider before visiting a medical facility, helping reduce the risk of exposing additional people to the highly contagious virus.
