AI Selloff Seen as Buying Opportunity as Market Deleveraging Nears Its End
The recent selloff in artificial intelligence-related stocks appears to have been driven primarily by forced deleveraging rather than weakening demand for AI technologies, leading some investors to view the market pullback as a potential buying opportunity.
According to the analysis, July's sharp decline in semiconductor and AI infrastructure stocks was fueled by a combination of margin calls, rising Treasury yields and heavy liquidation by leveraged investors rather than a deterioration in the industry's long-term fundamentals.
One of the biggest catalysts came from South Korea, where the KOSPI Index experienced a steep decline amid significant weakness in memory-chip companies. The selloff reportedly triggered the liquidation of hundreds of thousands of leveraged investment accounts, amplifying pressure across global AI-related stocks.
Another major event involved the AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness, managed by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. After suffering substantial losses on highly leveraged positions in AI infrastructure companies, the fund was forced to liquidate much of its portfolio.
The situation drew attention when Citadel, led by Ken Griffin, acquired a large portion of the portfolio at a discount. The transaction has been viewed by some market participants as a sign that institutional investors continue to see long-term value in AI infrastructure assets despite recent volatility.
The report argues that the wave of forced selling now appears to be easing. As leverage declines and margin-driven liquidations subside, market movements are expected to become increasingly influenced by underlying business fundamentals rather than technical selling pressure.
From a fundamental perspective, demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. The world's largest cloud providers continue to increase capital spending to expand artificial intelligence capabilities, while long-term supply agreements for advanced memory chips remain largely committed through 2026 and 2027.
At the same time, major cloud businesses continue to report solid revenue growth, reinforcing expectations that AI investments could support future earnings and cash-flow expansion.
The analysis also notes that recent market weakness has reduced valuations across many semiconductor and AI-related companies, making parts of the sector appear more attractive to long-term investors than they were earlier this year.
Interest rates remain another important factor influencing investor sentiment. Elevated U.S. Treasury yields have weighed on technology stocks in recent weeks, although the report suggests that easing inflation pressures and lower energy prices could eventually help stabilize bond yields and improve conditions for growth-oriented investments.
Based on these developments, the portfolio manager behind the analysis said cash holdings have been gradually reduced as positions in selected AI infrastructure companies were increased. Even so, the strategy continues to maintain a meaningful cash allocation to preserve flexibility and manage risk should market volatility continue.
