Washington Commanders vs. Philadelphia Eagles: Three Key Takeaways from the First Half

The Washington Commanders close out their 2025 season against the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia, looking for their third divisional win of the year. At halftime, Washington holds a 10–7 lead.

Quarterback Josh Johnson is making his second consecutive start, running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. has returned from illness, and Washington has its primary receiving group on the field.

Here are three key takeaways from the Commanders’ first half:

Josh Johnson looks more settled in the offense

Johnson is starting just his second game for Washington this season after both Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota were sidelined with injuries. He completed 15 of 23 passes for 198 yards against the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Day but has yet to throw a touchdown this season.

So far today, Johnson has completed 11 of 16 passes for 100 yards. While his numbers resemble last week’s totals, he appears more composed pushing the ball downfield. He has also added 27 rushing yards on three carries, including an impressive 11-yard scramble late in the half. He did, however, throw an ugly interception in the second quarter — though fortunately it didn’t result in Eagles points.

Johnson later led Washington on a five-play, 33-yard drive in just 48 seconds to set up a 56-yard field goal from kicker Jake Moody, who converted to make it 10–7 at the break.

Jake Moody misses, then redeems himself

Moody, Washington’s kicker since Week 13, missed his first field goal as a Commander — a 24-yard attempt that bounced off the upright.

Moody began the season with the San Francisco 49ers, appearing in only one game before being acquired by the Chicago Bears in mid-October. Washington added him in late November, and entering Week 18 he had gone 9-for-9 on field goal attempts, including a 51-yarder on Christmas Day.

He bounced back in a big way, drilling a 56-yard field goal as time expired in the half.

Commanders having trouble protecting the football

Washington turned the ball over three times in the first half — two fumbles and an interception. While the Commanders recovered both fumbles, ball security remains a serious concern for the offense.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt each fumbled, with Samuel recovering his own and Johnson falling on Croskey-Merritt’s miscue. Moments later, Johnson threw an interception deep in Washington territory, setting the Eagles up with a short field — but Jeremy Reaves responded with an interception of Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee to erase the threat.
