Vikings vs. Steelers: Strong Rally Falls Short as Injuries Pile Up

DUBLIN — The Minnesota Vikings fought hard, especially in the final quarter, but ultimately fell 24-21 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game played in Ireland.

The loss marked Minnesota’s first setback on international soil, dropping their all-time regular-season record abroad to 4-1.

Carson Wentz led a late rally, throwing two touchdowns in the final period to cut down an 18-point deficit. But the final drive ended bitterly when the quarterback was flagged for intentional grounding with under 45 seconds left — costing a down, field position, and a crucial 10-second runoff.

Wentz’s first touchdown of the game came on a 16-yard pass to Zavier Scott — also the rookie running back’s first career score — followed by a two-point conversion to Jalen Nailor, trimming the deficit to 24-14 with just under eight minutes remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Pittsburgh went for it on fourth-and-goal at the Vikings’ 3-yard line, but Byron Murphy Jr. stopped Kenneth Gainwell just short of the goal line. Three plays later, Wentz hit Jordan Addison for an 81-yard gain, only for the receiver to be dragged down at the 1-yard line by linebacker Payton Wilson. The drive eventually ended with a short touchdown pass to Nailor on fourth down, making it 24-21, but precious 38 seconds had ticked away. Just 2:08 remained.

Although Minnesota’s defense gave them another shot after a failed onside kick attempt, the offense stalled at the 39-yard line as time expired.

Four additional observations:

  1. Battling injuries up front

    • Left guard Donovan Jackson was out, replaced by Blake Brandel.

    • Right tackle Brian O’Neill exited after Minnesota’s first field goal, with Justin Skule stepping in.

    • Veteran center Ryan Kelly left with a suspected concussion, giving way to Michael Jurgens in the second half.

The Steelers took full advantage, dialing up multiple blitzes and holding Minnesota to just 15 net yards in the third quarter. Pittsburgh finished with six sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 14 quarterback hits, and eight passes defended — including two interceptions that set up prime field position.
