A video has emerged showing the aftermath of the fatal car crash in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 29 involving former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
In the footage, the 36-year-old boxer is seen being helped out of a damaged vehicle before walking toward another car displaying emergency lights.
Both Matchroom Boxing and the Ogun State Government confirmed in public statements that Joshua was transported to a hospital for evaluation following the incident. Matchroom reported that Joshua is in stable condition and will remain under medical observation.
According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps, the crash involved a black Lexus SUV and a stationary commercial Sinotruck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in southwestern Nigeria.
The agency said preliminary findings suggest the Lexus was traveling above the legal speed limit when the driver lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle, striking the parked truck. Authorities noted that excessive speeding and unsafe overtaking are among the leading causes of fatal highway accidents in the country.
Matchroom Boxing also confirmed that two members of Joshua’s team — Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele — were killed in the crash.
Officials have not yet disclosed who was driving the SUV at the time of the collision.
Joshua, born in the UK to Nigerian parents, spent part of his childhood in Nigeria attending boarding school in Ikenne, about 53 miles from the crash site, before returning to Britain at age 12.
Earlier this month, on December 19, Joshua returned to the ring after a 15-month break and defeated Jake Paul by knockout in the sixth round of their high-profile bout in Miami. He is expected to face long-time rival Tyson Fury in 2026.
