Verizon confirmed Wednesday that some customers across the United States are experiencing service outages affecting both voice and data connections.

In a statement shared on social media, the company said its engineering teams are aware of the issue and are actively working to restore service.

“We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers,” Verizon said. “Our engineers are engaged and are working quickly to identify and resolve the problem. We understand how critical reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.”

Data from outage-tracking site Downdetector showed a sharp spike in user reports around midday. At approximately 12:30 p.m. ET, nearly 173,000 outages were reported nationwide. That number dropped to about 120,600 by 1:22 p.m. ET and continued to decline to roughly 67,600 reports by 2:36 p.m. ET.

The majority of complaints — about 62% — involved mobile phone service issues. Another 34% cited a complete loss of signal, while roughly 4% reported mobile internet problems as of 2 p.m. ET.

Major metropolitan areas including New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles and Portland were among those reporting disruptions. Verizon noted that the actual number of affected customers may differ from Downdetector figures, which rely on user-submitted reports.

In an update issued at 2:15 p.m. ET, Verizon said its engineering teams remained fully deployed and focused on resolving the service interruption.

“Our teams continue to address today’s service disruption,” the company said. “We recognize the impact this has on our customers’ daily lives and remain committed to restoring service as quickly as possible.”

Verizon previously experienced a nationwide wireless outage in September 2024 that affected more than 100,000 users. During that incident, many iPhone customers were forced into SOS mode, while others reported dropped calls. The disruption drew scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission, which had earlier reached a settlement with Verizon over separate 911 service outages in multiple states.
