Anne Hathaway is expected to return to the top of the domestic box office this weekend as "Verity," the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestselling novel, opens in theaters nationwide.

Industry forecasts project the psychological thriller to earn between $30 million and $35 million during its opening weekend across 3,510 North American theaters. If projections hold, the film would become Hathaway's third No. 1 opening of 2026, following her roles in "The Devil Wears Prada 2" and "The Odyssey."

Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity stars Hathaway alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. The story follows bestselling author Verity Crawford, whose life changes after a serious accident leads her husband to hire a struggling writer to complete the remaining books in her successful series.

The film continues Hollywood's growing interest in adapting Colleen Hoover's novels for the big screen. Previous adaptations have included "It Ends With Us," "Regretting You," and "Reminders of Him," with It Ends With Usemerging as the franchise's biggest commercial success, generating approximately $350 million worldwide.

Produced with a reported budget of $40 million, Verity represents another theatrical release for Amazon MGM Studios, which has expanded its presence in cinemas over the past year. The studio previously found major success with "Project Hail Mary," while preparing several additional releases scheduled for later this year.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros.' "Digger," starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, is also opening this weekend but is projected to earn between $12 million and $15 million from roughly 3,300 theaters.

The environmental satire follows a powerful oil executive whose company faces a potentially catastrophic crisis. Industry analysts note that the film reportedly carries a significantly larger production budget than Verity, making its opening weekend performance an important factor in its overall theatrical outlook. Warner Bros. has disputed reports regarding the film's final production cost.

Early critical reactions to Digger have been mixed, prompting the studio to encourage audiences to judge the film for themselves.

With two high-profile releases debuting simultaneously, this weekend's box office will provide an early indication of audience demand for both the bestselling novel adaptation and the original big-budget drama.
