LONDON (AP) — Oleksandr Usyk solidified his dominance in heavyweight boxing by knocking out Daniel Dubois in the fifth round on Saturday, reclaiming the undisputed world title for the second time.
The undefeated Ukrainian retained his WBA, WBC, and WBO belts while regaining the IBF title, which he had vacated just over a year ago.
At 38 years old, Usyk dropped Dubois twice in the fifth round—the second time with a sharp left hook. The British fighter, dazed on the canvas, failed to beat the referee’s count in front of a packed Wembley Stadium.
Known more for his technical brilliance than knockout power, Usyk silenced doubts about his age and potential decline.
"Thirty-eight is young," he joked in the ring, adding that it’s "just the beginning." When asked about his next opponents, he teased possible matchups: "Maybe Tyson Fury, Derek Chisora, Anthony Joshua, or Joseph Parker."
This was Usyk’s (24-0, 15 KOs) second win over Dubois in under two years—but this time, without controversy like the low-blow incident that marred their first fight, which ended in a ninth-round TKO in Poland. This time, the finish was decisive.
Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) joined fellow Britons Fury and Joshua as fighters who have lost twice to Usyk, who was already an undisputed cruiserweight champion before moving up six years ago.
"I gave everything I had. No excuses—he’s a great champion, but I’ll be back," Dubois told DAZN. The British fighter showed improvement from their first bout, where he was outboxed by Usyk’s sharp jabs. Between the fourth and fifth rounds, his corner urged him to use a double jab, but Usyk ended the fight before the strategy could take effect.
Dubois had hoped to become the first British heavyweight to unify all major titles since Lennox Lewis over 25 years ago.
Event Highlights:
Jake Paul’s Provocation: The YouTuber-turned-boxer was loudly booed when shown on the big screens. Asked about a potential fight with Anthony Joshua, he declared: "It’s going to happen—right here at Wembley."
Nostalgic Tribute: Usyk entered the ring with a stuffed Eeyore (from Winnie the Pooh) tucked into his jumpsuit—a good-luck charm gifted by his daughter, present at his past fights.
Special Guest: Frank Bruno, the former WBC heavyweight champion who won his belt at the old Wembley in 1995, attended the event.
What’s Next? The win cements Usyk’s place at the top of heavyweight boxing, setting the stage for potential rematches or superfights—including the long-awaited clash with Tyson Fury.
