The U.S. Naval Academy remains under lockdown after reports of a potential threat led to one person being injured, officials confirmed. Naval Security Forces responded to what was initially described as “suspicious activity” on campus.

“At 5:07 p.m. EST, Naval Support Activity Annapolis security, working with local law enforcement, responded to reports of suspicious activity on Academy grounds,” a Naval official told Fox News Digital. “There is no active shooter threat. However, one individual was injured as Naval Security Forces were clearing a building.”

The injured person was airlifted for treatment and is currently in stable condition. Officials added that the base remains locked down and updates will follow as the situation develops.

Earlier in the evening, gunshots were reported inside Bancroft Hall, which houses thousands of midshipmen. While one individual was evacuated for medical care, several others were being evaluated at the scene.

According to an internal email obtained by Fox News, Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen Capt. David Forman clarified that the incident stemmed from a midshipman who mistakenly perceived authorized law enforcement as a threat, engaged, and was injured in the process. The midshipman is now stable and receiving medical care.

Confusion escalated after false claims circulated, including one report that a shooter was posing as military police. Officials now stress that these details were misinformation.

“Secretary Phelan has been kept informed with updates from NCIS and Naval Academy leadership. The lockdown remains in place out of an abundance of caution,” a Navy spokesperson confirmed.

Lt. Naweed Lemar, Public Affairs Officer for Naval Support Activity Annapolis, added: “The base is on lockdown as we respond to reported threats. This is an ongoing situation, and updates will be provided as they become available.”

The Defense Department also acknowledged the lockdown, confirming that Secretary Hegseth had been briefed and that officials are monitoring developments closely.

Separately, a message circulating among midshipmen—though not independently verified by Fox News—claimed the initial threat originated on the anonymous chat app Yodel and was linked to a former midshipman who was later confirmed to be at home in the Midwest. The same message emphasized that the day’s greatest danger came from misinformation.

A former student described the ordeal as particularly unsettling given Bancroft Hall’s significance to those stationed there. “It’s both your home and your workplace,” they said, noting that the building houses more than 4,000 individuals.

Tactical officers and armed patrols continue to sweep the campus as the investigation remains ongoing.
