U.S. Army Sergeant Arrested After Shooting Five Soldiers at Georgia Base

ATLANTA, Aug 6 (Reuters) – A U.S. Army sergeant opened fire on fellow soldiers with a personal handgun at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield near Savannah, Georgia, on Wednesday, wounding five before being subdued and arrested, military officials reported.

All five victims were in stable condition, though three required surgery, according to Brigadier General John Lubas, the base commander. Security lockdown measures were lifted after the suspect’s arrest, with no ongoing threat to the surrounding community. A motive remains unclear.

The shooter was identified as 28-year-old Quornelius Radford, an active-duty sergeant specializing in automated logistics within the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team’s supply unit. Stationed at Fort Stewart since 2022, Radford had no prior combat deployments. Lubas confirmed Radford had a previous drunken-driving arrest, unknown to command until after the incident.

The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. at Radford’s workplace, targeting colleagues in his unit. Witnesses tackled and restrained him before military police arrived. Radford is now in custody pending charges.

Lubas stated the weapon’s entry onto the secure base was unexplained. President Donald Trump addressed the attack from the White House, calling the suspect “horrible” and offering prayers for victims.

Military Base Shootings: A Recurring Threat

Despite tight security, U.S. military installations have faced multiple shootings. Notable incidents include:

  • 2009 (Fort Hood, Texas): A major killed 13 and wounded 30+ in a medical building.

  • 2014 (Fort Hood): A soldier fatally shot three and injured 16 before suicide.

  • 2013 (Washington Navy Yard): A contractor killed 12.

  • 2019 (Pensacola, Florida): A Saudi Air Force lieutenant killed three at a U.S. Navy base.

Fort Stewart, home to nearly 9,000 personnel, is located 40 miles southwest of Savannah.
