United Airlines Reassesses Cabin Plans as Boeing 737 MAX 10 Certification Nears

United Airlines is preparing to make an important fleet decision as Boeing's long-delayed 737 MAX 10 moves closer to federal certification. Years of production and certification setbacks have forced the carrier to rethink how it will configure the aircraft and make use of premium seats that have been sitting in storage since the original rollout plans were delayed.

Back in 2018, then-United President and current CEO Scott Kirby unveiled an ambitious vision for the airline's largest Boeing 737 MAX model. The aircraft was expected to feature lie-flat Polaris-style seats and operate lucrative transcontinental routes, with service originally scheduled to begin in 2020.

However, the MAX 10's certification has been postponed for more than six years, leaving United with hundreds of custom-designed premium seats that cannot be installed on other aircraft.

"We've got a bunch of lie-flat seats that we don't know what to do with," Kirby told CNBC during an interview at Newark Liberty International Airport. "They don't fit on other airplanes."

United has not yet revealed the final cabin configuration for the MAX 10 or announced which routes the aircraft will serve once deliveries begin.

Delays Forced United to Change Strategy

The prolonged certification process stemmed largely from Boeing's redesign of the aircraft's anti-icing system, along with increased regulatory oversight following the company's safety and manufacturing challenges in recent years.

While waiting for the MAX 10, United shifted its premium strategy by upgrading a fleet of Airbus A321neo aircraft with redesigned Polaris suites, premium economy seating, and enhanced cabins for high-demand transcontinental routes. The airline has branded these aircraft as its new "Coastliner" fleet.

Because the Airbus A321neo and the Boeing 737 MAX 10 have different cabin dimensions and layouts, the premium interiors developed for one aircraft cannot simply be transferred to the other, creating another challenge for United's fleet planners.

Deliveries Expected in 2027

Boeing recently secured FAA certification for the smaller 737 MAX 7, clearing an important regulatory hurdle for the MAX family. Industry observers now expect certification of the MAX 10 to follow in the near future.

United anticipates receiving its first 737 MAX 10 aircraft during the summer of 2027. According to the airline's latest quarterly filing, it currently has 167 MAX 10 aircraft on order, making the model a key component of its future fleet expansion.

As certification approaches, United must now decide whether to move forward with its original premium-cabin vision or redesign the aircraft's interiors to better align with its evolving network strategy and customer demand. The decision could shape the airline's domestic premium product for years to come.
