Tyler Reddick will start from pole position in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway after persistent rain forced NASCAR officials to cancel qualifying on Saturday.
Weather conditions continued to disrupt activities throughout the weekend, with additional rain still expected ahead of the prestigious 400-lap race, one of NASCAR’s biggest annual events.
Because qualifying was washed out, the starting lineup was determined using NASCAR’s rulebook formula, placing points leader Reddick at the front of the field in his No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota.
Joining him on the front row will be Ty Gibbs in the No. 54 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.
The remainder of the top five starters includes Shane van Gisbergen of Trackhouse Racing, Michael McDowell from Spire Motorsports, and Chase Briscoe representing Joe Gibbs Racing.
The weekend also carried an emotional tone across the NASCAR community following the death of veteran driver Kyle Busch, who reportedly passed away Thursday after severe pneumonia developed into sepsis and caused rapid complications, according to a statement released by his family.
Replacing Busch in the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet will be Austin Hill, who is scheduled to make his third Cup Series start at Charlotte’s 1.5-mile oval.
Meanwhile, Katherine Legge continues making history as the first woman attempting “The Double” — competing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. She will start 37th based on points standings.
Rain also caused major disruptions for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and the Craftsman Truck Series, with officials forced to set starting grids for all three NASCAR divisions according to rulebook procedures instead of on-track qualifying sessions.
Despite the weather interruptions, Cup Series drivers were able to complete limited practice laps before additional rain moved into the area and halted track activity once again.
