At least two people were killed in an active shooter incident near Barus and Holley, according to an email sent to the Brown University community. Eight additional victims were reported to be in critical condition and were transported to area hospitals.
In an update issued at 5:27 p.m., the Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed reports of shots fired near Governor Street. A DPS alert sent at 5:10 p.m. stated that no suspects were in custody at that time.
Video footage obtained by The Herald showed a significant police presence on campus, along with multiple emergency vehicles on nearby streets. Additional footage appeared to show officers assisting several individuals on the ground near the Sciences Library.
Multiple buildings across campus were placed on lockdown following the incident.
DPS sent an alert to students immediately after the shooting, instructing them to hide, run or evacuate until further notice. An earlier alert at 4:50 p.m. indicated that a suspect was in custody, but a follow-up alert issued approximately 20 minutes later clarified that no suspects were being held.
Katie Sun ’28 said she was studying in the Engineering Research Center lobby when she heard gunshots around 4:10 p.m. She evacuated the building without her belongings and ran to her dorm for safety.
“It was honestly terrifying,” Sun said. “The shots sounded like they were coming from where the classrooms are.”
Refath Bari GS said he was walking down the stairs in the Engineering Research Center when he heard the gunfire.
“There was confusion, and then people started running,” he said. “I ran as fast as I could across the street toward Thayer Street, where I took shelter in a student’s apartment.”
Sruti Peddi ’28 told The Herald that she was at Zinneken’s on Thayer Street when she began receiving messages from friends reporting shots fired near Hegeman Hall.
“I heard that the shooter had left the area and was walking up Thayer Street,” Peddi wrote. “I was worried because I was there, and emergency sirens were passing by.”
DPS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
