Officials in the Trump White House are reportedly expressing strong frustration after CBS News hired a former communications aide tied to ex-Rep. Liz Cheney, a prominent critic of President Donald Trump.

According to a report by Axios, the network recently brought on Jeremy Adler, who previously worked within Cheney’s political operation, to join its communications team — a move that has raised eyebrows among Trump allies.

One senior official in the administration told Axios that the hiring decision was deeply concerning given Cheney’s role in efforts to investigate and politically target Trump following the events surrounding the January 6 investigation.

“The idea that CBS would hire Liz Cheney’s spokesperson — someone who actively worked to prosecute President Trump and push for efforts that could prevent his supporters from participating in public life — is simply unbelievable,” the official said.

The official also questioned the decision-making behind the move, reportedly asking, “What in the world is Bari Weiss thinking?”

The controversy comes amid ongoing tensions between President Trump and major legacy media outlets, including CBS. Trump has repeatedly criticized what he describes as bias in mainstream media coverage.

The situation is further complicated by Trump’s longstanding relationship with tech billionaire Larry Ellison and his son David Ellison, who now controls Paramount Skydance, the parent company of CBS.

After acquiring the company last year, David Ellison appointed journalist Bari Weiss, a former New York Times editor known for her criticism of progressive media culture, as editor-in-chief of CBS News.

Trump previously took legal action against CBS, filing a $20 billion lawsuit related to a 60 Minutes interview with his 2024 presidential opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris. The lawsuit accused the network of manipulating and misleading viewers during a critical moment in the election cycle.

For many Trump supporters, the hiring of a figure connected to Cheney — one of Trump’s most outspoken Republican critics — raises fresh concerns about whether major media organizations are willing to move past political battles that dominated Washington during the previous administration.

The White House has not issued an official statement on the matter, but several administration figures have signaled privately that the decision has intensified distrust between Trump allies and major media institutions.
