Trump Signals Major Decision as Administration Weighs Next Steps in Iran Conflict

President Donald Trump said his administration is approaching a critical decision on the future of U.S. policy toward Iran, indicating that both diplomatic and military options remain under consideration as the conflict enters a pivotal stage.

In an interview with Axios, Trump said he will soon determine whether to intensify military operations against the Iranian regime or continue pursuing other strategies aimed at bringing the conflict to an end. The president emphasized that no final decision has been made and noted that "it's a big decision."

The comments come ahead of a scheduled meeting during the United Nations General Assembly with the leaders of six Gulf nations—Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. According to Trump, the discussions will help him better understand the region's position before deciding on the next phase of U.S. policy.

Administration officials say the talks could influence whether the United States places renewed emphasis on diplomacy or considers additional military measures. Trump has repeatedly expressed confidence that the conflict can be resolved but has also maintained that all options remain available if negotiations fail.

Earlier this summer, the administration postponed a broader military offensive after regional partners raised concerns about the possibility of Iranian retaliation against critical energy infrastructure in the Gulf. Since then, Washington has continued applying economic pressure through sanctions, maintained a naval presence in the region, and worked to protect commercial shipping routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. defense officials have also kept American forces in the Middle East at an elevated level of readiness while the White House evaluates its long-term strategy. According to officials, the administration is developing a broader post-conflict framework focused on regional security, containing Iran's influence, and strengthening cooperation between Israel and its neighboring countries.

When asked whether he expects to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during next week's U.N. meetings in New York, President Trump replied that such a meeting remains a possibility.
