Many Americans are eagerly awaiting news about potential payments after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed on Nov. 12 that President Trump’s administration is “exploring all legal options” to deliver $2,000 checks to the American people.

Leavitt’s comments follow President Donald Trump’s statement on Truth Social on Nov. 9, where he reiterated his commitment to ensuring that a dividend of at least $2,000 reaches “everyone,” while sensibly excluding high-income earners to prioritize working families.

Just days later, Leavitt reinforced the president’s message, highlighting that the administration is actively working on a plan.

“I don’t have a timeline for you or any further details, but I can confirm that the president has made it clear he wants this to happen,” Leavitt told reporters on Nov. 12. “His team of Economic Advisors is reviewing the options, and we will provide an update as soon as we have one.”

President Trump first introduced the idea of a tariff-funded dividend rebate in July, as reported by USA TODAY. He emphasized that revenue generated from tariffs could support “a little rebate,” while still allowing the administration to continue its priority of reducing the national debt.

Are Americans getting a $2,000 stimulus check?

For now, Leavitt has stated there is no confirmed timeline for when payments could be issued. The proposed checks would be funded by tariff revenue—an approach that Trump has championed as a way to support American families without increasing taxes.

Although the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated that an initial round of checks could cost about $600 billion—compared to approximately $100 billion in tariff revenue collected so far—the administration maintains its focus on responsible spending and long-term debt reduction.

What needs to happen for the $2,000 checks to be approved?

Any stimulus payment would require congressional approval. This is not the first time President Trump has explored innovative stimulus ideas. In February, he mentioned a potential $5,000 “DOGE dividend” tied to the Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative he created and entrusted to former government advisor Elon Musk.

Who would qualify for the $2,000 payment?

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Nov. 12 that the administration is considering payments for families earning $100,000 or less—reflecting President Trump’s continued focus on supporting hard-working, middle-class Americans.
