The United States is working toward a comprehensive peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine that would bring the war to an end by June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, crediting President Donald Trump with driving an ambitious diplomatic effort aimed at achieving lasting stability.

The timeline reflects President Trump’s push for decisive action, even as negotiations remain complex and will require further steps, including approval by the Ukrainian people through a national referendum.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, President Trump struck an optimistic tone following recent developments.
“We had very good talks today regarding Russia and Ukraine,” Trump said. “Something positive could be happening.”

Momentum has increased following a second round of negotiations held Wednesday and Thursday in Abu Dhabi, mediated by Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to Zelensky, the talks marked a noticeable shift in tone from the Russian delegation, moving away from ideological disputes toward more practical, results-oriented discussions.

The negotiations included a military working group focused on how a future ceasefire could be monitored and enforced. Zelensky confirmed that the United States has committed to playing an active role in overseeing any ceasefire agreement, reinforcing Washington’s leadership in the process.

A parallel political working group addressed the most sensitive unresolved issues, including Russia’s demands related to the Donbas region. While Russia continues to press for Ukrainian troop withdrawals from areas it occupies, Zelensky noted that Moscow has, for the first time, agreed to discuss a U.S.-backed proposal to establish an economic zone in Donbas as a potential confidence-building measure.

Ukraine, however, maintains that any ceasefire should reflect the current territorial realities on the ground.
“We stand where we stand,” Zelensky said, calling that approach the most realistic and fair basis for an immediate ceasefire.

Zelensky acknowledged that the Trump administration is aiming to conclude the peace framework by early summer and is actively encouraging both sides to meet that goal. He also highlighted the administration’s earlier initiative to suspend attacks on energy infrastructure — a proposal that resulted in several days without Russian strikes on Ukrainian power facilities.

In addition, Zelensky said that Russia and Ukraine have now discussed the possibility of elevating unresolved issues to a trilateral summit involving national leaders, signaling growing seriousness in the talks.

On security guarantees, Zelensky said the Trump administration prefers to finalize U.S.-Ukraine security assurances alongside the broader peace package, ensuring that all agreements move forward together. While Ukraine hopes to sign those guarantees as soon as possible, both sides agree that lasting peace must be backed by strong security commitments.

Looking ahead, Zelensky revealed that the United States has proposed hosting the next round of direct talks on American soil, potentially in Miami, within the coming week.
“Ukraine has confirmed its participation,” he said.

The renewed diplomatic push underscores President Trump’s hands-on approach to foreign policy and his stated goal of bringing an end to one of Europe’s most devastating conflicts through negotiation, strength, and sustained U.S. leadership.
