Trump Administration Acts Quickly to Support Venezuela After Devastating Quake Crisis
The Trump administration moved swiftly Wednesday to offer U.S. assistance after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela's northern coast, causing widespread destruction in Caracas and prompting the country's interim government to declare a national state of emergency.
President Donald Trump assured that the United States stands "ready, willing, and able to help," announcing that he had directed federal agencies to prepare an immediate humanitarian response for the Venezuelan people.
"The United States is ready to move quickly," Trump said in a message posted on Truth Social, reaffirming America's commitment to supporting those affected by the disaster.
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau confirmed that U.S. officials were already coordinating with Venezuelan authorities to organize emergency assistance. The State Department has mobilized disaster response teams, including search-and-rescue personnel, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid to assist communities impacted by the devastating earthquakes.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also emphasized the administration's commitment to delivering a rapid and effective response. He said the Department of Defense would assist with logistics after damage to Caracas' airport complicated relief operations.
"It'll be big, it'll be fast, and it'll be effective," Rubio said, highlighting the administration's determination to provide meaningful assistance as quickly as possible.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a nationwide state of emergency after reporting at least 164 deaths and 971 injuries following one of the strongest earthquakes to strike Venezuela in more than a century.
In a video message released Thursday, Rodríguez thanked the Trump administration for its support and solidarity during the crisis. She also acknowledged humanitarian assistance offered by several international partners, including the Dominican Republic, Brazil, China, and Qatar.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the consecutive earthquakes triggered the agency's highest-level emergency alerts because of the potential for severe humanitarian and economic impacts. Officials warned that the disaster could result in significant damage and long-term recovery challenges.
The administration's rapid response underscores its commitment to humanitarian leadership and international cooperation during times of crisis. U.S. officials said they will continue working closely with Venezuelan authorities and global partners to deliver life-saving assistance, support recovery efforts, and help affected communities rebuild as quickly as possible.
