Timberlake Files Lawsuit to Prevent Public Release of 2024 DWI Footage

Justin Timberlake has filed a lawsuit against the Village of Sag Harbor in an effort to block the release of body camera footage from his 2024 arrest, according to court documents.
The 45-year-old singer pleaded guilty in September 2024 to the reduced charge of driving while ability impaired. As part of a plea agreement, he completed community service and issued a public apology.
On Monday, Timberlake submitted a petition against the Sag Harbor Village Police Department, Police Chief Robert Drake in his official capacity, and the Village of Sag Harbor. The filing seeks to prevent the public release of approximately eight hours of bodycam footage recorded the night of his June 18, 2024 arrest.
According to the petition, Timberlake’s legal team was informed March 1 that the department intended to respond to a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request seeking the full footage, subject to certain redactions for medical and security reasons.
His attorneys argue the video contains personal and identifying information unrelated to any legitimate public interest. The filing states the footage shows Timberlake in a “vulnerable state” during roadside sobriety testing, his arrest and the hours that followed, including details about his physical appearance, speech and demeanor.
The petition contends that releasing the footage would cause “severe and irreparable harm” to Timberlake’s personal and professional reputation, potentially exposing him to ridicule and harassment while serving no meaningful public purpose. His legal team is asking the court to prohibit disclosure of the footage in full or in part, calling it an unwarranted invasion of privacy under FOIL.
At the time of his arrest, the responding officer reported that Timberlake performed poorly on field sobriety tests and exhibited signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes, the odor of alcohol, slowed speech and unsteadiness.
Timberlake’s attorney, Edward Burke Jr., has disputed those claims, previously stating that the singer was not intoxicated and that police made “significant errors” during the arrest.
After pleading guilty to the lesser charge, Timberlake publicly acknowledged his mistake.
“This is a mistake that I made,” he said at the time. “Even one drink — don’t get behind the wheel of a car.”
Timberlake was originally charged with driving while intoxicated, along with traffic violations for failing to keep right and failing to stop at a stop sign.
