The Detroit Tigers are just one win away from advancing to the 2025 MLB postseason’s American League Division Series against the Seattle Mariners — but that celebration will have to wait, at least for now.

In Game 2 of their wild-card series on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Progressive Field in Cleveland, the Tigers trail the Guardians 6-1. Cleveland broke the game wide open with a five-run eighth inning that put Detroit on the ropes.

Right-hander Casey Mize, making his postseason debut after missing the 2024 playoffs, started for Detroit and worked three innings. Cleveland countered with Tanner Bibee, who finished the 2025 season 12-11 with a 4.24 ERA across 182⅓ innings.

If the Guardians hang on to win, the series will be tied 1-1 and head to a decisive winner-take-all Game 3 on Thursday, Oct. 2. If the Tigers rally, they’ll clinch a sweep and move on to face the Mariners in Seattle for Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday, Oct. 4.
