MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — Golf legend Tiger Woods is facing two misdemeanor charges after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a rollover crash on Jupiter Island on Friday afternoon, authorities confirmed.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on South Beach Road, near Woods’ residence.
When officers from the Jupiter Island Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered a pickup truck towing a pressure-cleaning trailer and a Range Rover — driven by Woods — overturned on its side.
Sheriff John Budensiek said officers immediately noticed that the driver of the Range Rover appeared to be impaired, prompting them to request assistance from DUI investigators.
Preliminary findings indicate that the pickup truck was traveling northbound and slowing down to turn into a driveway when the driver noticed Woods’ vehicle approaching rapidly from behind. With limited space on the narrow two-lane road and no shoulder available, the truck driver attempted to move aside.
“The driver saw the Range Rover coming at a high rate of speed,” Budensiek explained. “He tried to pull off the road, but there simply wasn’t enough room.”
Authorities say Woods then swerved in an attempt to avoid a collision but clipped the rear of the trailer, causing his SUV to overturn.
Woods, who was alone in the vehicle, managed to exit through the passenger-side door following the crash. It remains unclear whether he was wearing a seat belt at the time.
Investigators at the scene conducted a series of field sobriety tests and reported that Woods showed signs of impairment. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Martin County Jail.
According to Budensiek, Woods complied with a breathalyzer test, which returned a 0.00 blood alcohol level. However, he declined to submit to a urine test.
“He has been charged with DUI involving property damage and refusal to comply with a lawful test,” the sheriff said.
While alcohol was ruled out, investigators believe the impairment may have been caused by medication or another substance. No drugs or prescription medications were found inside the vehicle at the scene, and officials noted that determining the exact cause of impairment may not be possible.
Despite the seriousness of the crash, no injuries were reported, and authorities emphasized that the outcome could have been far worse. Woods is expected to remain in custody for a minimum of eight hours, as required under Florida law for DUI-related arrests. The case remains under investigation as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
