Despite entering Thursday Night Football as underdogs due to a long injury list, the 49ers looked like the stronger team in the first half.
San Francisco played without quarterback Brock Purdy, receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall, and tight end George Kittle, yet still built a 17-7 halftime lead over the Rams.
The Rams never truly slowed down the 49ers. San Francisco’s only major setback came on a dropped third-down pass by Kendrick Bourne, his fourth drop in the past two games.
The 49ers put together touchdown drives of 72 and 91 yards, both capped by Mac Jones touchdown passes — a 6-yard strike to Jake Tonges and a 1-yard toss to Christian McCaffrey. They closed the half with a 12-play, 48-yard march, ending in a 37-yard Eddy Piniero field goal as time expired. In total, the 49ers outgained the Rams 225 yards to 137.
Jones went 15-of-23 for 179 yards in the half. McCaffrey added 45 rushing yards on 13 carries plus 44 receiving yards on five catches. Bourne had three receptions for 64 yards. The 49ers were also perfect on fourth down, converting both of their attempts.
The Rams managed just three possessions. They punted after a short opening drive, then lost a fumble on a Matthew Stafford pitch to Blake Corum that was recovered by Travis Gipson. Their lone highlight came on an eight-play, 85-yard drive capped by Stafford’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Kyren Williams.
Stafford finished the half 9-of-13 for 109 yards, with Puka Nacua catching three passes for 24 yards. On defense, San Francisco lost lineman Kalia Davis to a hand injury; he is questionable to return.
