SKILLMAN, N.J. — Authorities in Somerset County are investigating the deaths of three people discovered inside a Montgomery Township home after police conducted a welfare check, in what officials believe may be a murder-suicide.
Montgomery Township police officers entered the residence on Wild Azalea Lane Friday evening after unsuccessful attempts to contact the occupants. Inside, they found the bodies of two adult women in separate bedrooms, each appearing to have suffered gunshot wounds. Investigators also found the body of an adult man with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital pronounced all three individuals dead at the residence.
Major Crimes Investigation Underway
The investigation has been turned over to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit, which is working alongside detectives from the Montgomery Township Police Department, the Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office.
Authorities said autopsies will be conducted to confirm the identities of the deceased and determine the official causes and manners of death.
Officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public and that the investigation remains active.
Timeline Leading to the Discovery
According to investigators, the sequence of events began early Wednesday morning when emergency dispatchers received a report of a residential alarm triggered by broken glass at the property.
The following day, a concerned neighbor requested a welfare check after noticing accumulated mail and being unable to reach members of the household by phone or text. Officers responded but were unable to make contact with anyone inside, prompting a missing-person-style inquiry into the residents' whereabouts.
On Friday evening, police gained lawful access to the home, where they discovered the three bodies.
Residents of the Home
Public records indicate the home was occupied by David Grodnick, Lora ("Lori") Grodnick, and their daughter, Sloane Grodnick.
David Grodnick served as a senior vice president and underwriting counsel for a national real estate services company, specializing in commercial real estate transactions. He previously lived in Princeton and held memberships at several private country clubs in central New Jersey.
Sloane Grodnick graduated from The Hun School of Princeton before earning a bachelor's degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2024. She was reportedly enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts program at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Property records list her as the principal owner of the residence as of September.
As a child, Sloane received local attention after organizing a donation drive to help an abused foster child, collecting toys and supplies through her Brownie troop after learning about the girl's circumstances.
Property Background
The nearly 6,000-square-foot home, situated on approximately two acres, has an estimated value of about $2 million, according to public property records. Ownership records show the property changed hands several times in recent years.
Authorities Seeking Information
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and have asked anyone with information relevant to the case to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit or the Montgomery Township Police Department. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through the prosecutor's online reporting system or confidential tip line.
Officials have not released additional details while the investigation remains ongoing.
