Millions of Americans who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will notice a change in the payment schedule as August approaches. While some beneficiaries may expect a payment during the month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed that no regular SSI payment will be issued in August due to the way the calendar falls this year.

Because August 1, 2026, falls on a Saturday, the SSA will send August's SSI benefits on Friday, July 31, following its longstanding policy of issuing payments on the previous business day whenever the first of the month falls on a weekend or federal holiday. Beneficiaries will still receive their full monthly benefit; only the payment date has changed.

SSI provides financial assistance to eligible individuals with disabilities, older adults with limited income and resources, and certain qualifying households. In 2026, the maximum monthly federal benefit is $994 for an eligible individual, $1,491 for an eligible couple, and $498 for an essential person.

This is the fourth time in 2026 that the SSI payment schedule has shifted because of weekends or holidays. Earlier in the year, January's payment was issued on December 31, 2025, since New Year's Day is a federal holiday. February's payment arrived on January 30, and March's payment was sent on February 27, as both February 1 and March 1 fell on Sundays.

The payment calendar will return to its normal schedule after August until later in the year. Beneficiaries will receive two SSI payments in October, with the second serving as November's benefit because November 1 falls on a Sunday. Likewise, two payments will be issued in December, with the second covering January 2027 benefits.

Other Social Security beneficiaries will continue to receive their payments according to the standard monthly schedule:

• August 3: Beneficiaries who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and SSI.

• August 12: Birth dates from the 1st through the 10th.

• August 19: Birth dates from the 11th through the 20th.

• August 26: Birth dates from the 21st through the 31st.

The Social Security Administration also continues its transition toward electronic payments, encouraging beneficiaries to use direct deposit or other digital payment options. The move is part of a broader federal effort to improve payment efficiency and reduce reliance on paper checks.

According to SSA data, fewer than 1% of beneficiaries still receive paper checks. Those who have not yet switched can enroll in direct deposit through the Social Security Administration or their financial institution. Individuals without access to traditional banking services may receive benefits through the Direct Express prepaid debit card program.

SSA officials have said the agency intends to complete its transition to electronic benefit payments, while continuing to ensure recipients receive their benefits on time.
