Indiana transfer quarterback Alberto Mendoza has committed to Georgia Tech, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.
Mendoza, the younger brother of Heisman Trophy–winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, entered the NCAA transfer portal one day after Indiana’s College Football Playoff national championship win over Miami. He quickly visited Georgia Tech and finalized his decision to join the Yellow Jackets.
The 6-foot-2, 207-pound redshirt freshman appeared in nine games this season, completing 75% of his passes for 286 yards, rushing for 190 yards, and accounting for six total touchdowns with just one interception. Mendoza will have three years of eligibility remaining in Atlanta.
Mendoza joins a Georgia Tech program in transition at quarterback following the departure of Haynes King, a three-year starter and first-team All-ACC selection who totaled 10,181 yards and 91 touchdowns during his career with the Yellow Jackets.
Indiana’s staff anticipated Mendoza’s exit after the Hoosiers landed Josh Hoover, the former TCU quarterback and ESPN’s No. 6-ranked transfer, earlier this month.
Georgia Tech remained in the market for a quarterback after King’s primary backup, Aaron Philo, transferred to Florida. This offseason, Mendoza will compete with redshirt sophomore Graham Knowles, redshirt freshman Grady Adamson, and incoming freshman Cole Bergeron for playing time.
Indiana and Miami players have until Jan. 24 to enter the transfer portal following the conclusion of their seasons. The Hoosiers capped their historic run with a 27–21 victory in the CFP national championship game.
Mendoza did not play in the title game but logged 102 offensive snaps during Indiana’s 16–0 season, primarily in lopsided wins. That included nine snaps in the Hoosiers’ 38–3 CFP quarterfinal victory over Alabama at the Rose Bowl.
