Nearly seven months after Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Arizona home, investigators are examining a separate discovery that initially fueled speculation online but, according to authorities, is not connected to her case.
Over the weekend, human remains were found in a remote desert area near Nancy Guthrie's residence, prompting the Pima County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) to launch an investigation. The discovery quickly generated widespread discussion on social media, with many questioning whether it could be linked to the disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of TODAY co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.
However, law enforcement officials moved swiftly to address those rumors.
Sheriff Says No Connection Has Been Established
In an official statement, the Pima County Sheriff's Department confirmed that Search and Rescue deputies responded to reports of human remains found near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard.
According to Sheriff Chris Nanos, preliminary findings indicate that the remains had been at the location for a considerable period of time.
"At this time, there is no indication they are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation," the department said, adding that additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
Ransom Notes Made Public
The latest development comes just weeks after investigators publicly released two ransom notes that were allegedly sent following Nancy Guthrie's disappearance.
The first note, reportedly delivered on February 2, one day after she was reported missing, claimed that Nancy had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom payment in Bitcoin for her safe return. The message alleged that she was alive but being held until payment was received.
A second letter, sent several days later, claimed that Nancy had died due to a heart condition brought on by stress and the lack of necessary medication. The note further alleged that she had been buried in a natural area.
Why Investigators Released the Letters
Sheriff Nanos explained that investigators decided to release the alleged ransom notes because copies had already begun circulating publicly. Officials also believe that details contained in the letters—including specific wording, writing style, and phrasing—could trigger someone's memory and generate valuable investigative leads.
According to the sheriff, detectives hope members of the public may recognize elements of the notes that could help identify whoever wrote them or provide new information about the ongoing investigation.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with relevant information to come forward as they work to determine what happened to Nancy Guthrie. At this stage, officials emphasize that the recently discovered human remains have not been linked to her disappearance, and both investigations remain ongoing.
