Ukrainian Drone Strike Targets St. Petersburg Region Ahead of Major Economic Forum

Ukraine launched a large-scale drone operation targeting areas around Saint Petersburg just hours before the opening of Russia’s flagship economic forum, one of the country's most important international business events.

As morning arrived, residents reported seeing smoke rising from multiple locations near Russia’s second-largest city. The incident occurred ahead of the annual economic gathering, where Russian officials expect thousands of participants from more than 100 countries to discuss investment, trade, and economic cooperation.

Russian authorities stated that air defense systems intercepted dozens of drones overnight and reported impacts in several districts surrounding St. Petersburg. Officials said there were no immediate reports of fatalities.

The security incident prompted temporary disruptions, including restrictions at Pulkovo Airport and interruptions to mobile internet services in parts of the region. Authorities in neighboring Baltic countries also issued precautionary alerts as the situation unfolded.

Later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces had conducted long-range drone operations against multiple targets inside Russia, including energy-related facilities and military infrastructure near the Baltic coast.

Among the locations reportedly targeted was the port city of Kronstadt, home to important naval facilities associated with Russia’s Baltic Fleet. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show drones approaching coastal installations, although independent verification of the footage remains limited.

The strikes came as Russia prepared to host the annual economic forum in St. Petersburg, an event often described as one of the country's premier business and investment conferences. Prior to the conflict in Ukraine, the gathering regularly attracted major international corporations, government officials, and business leaders from around the world.

This year's event is expected to feature delegates from numerous countries, including a small delegation from the United States, alongside business executives, policymakers, and international guests.

The latest operation highlights Ukraine's growing long-range drone capabilities. Since the start of the conflict, Kyiv has significantly expanded its domestic defense production and increasingly targeted energy infrastructure, fuel facilities, and military assets located deep inside Russian territory.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to produce casualties on both sides. Russian-controlled authorities in eastern Ukraine reported deaths following a drone strike on a passenger vehicle, while Ukrainian officials continue to report civilian casualties from ongoing missile and drone attacks targeting cities across Ukraine.

As both nations intensify the use of long-range weapons and drone technology, the conflict remains marked by continued military escalation, infrastructure attacks, and heightened security concerns far beyond the front lines.
