Scientists Find Evidence That Global Warming Has Accelerated

A new study by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) has found strong evidence that the pace of global warming has increased over the past decade, suggesting the planet is heating faster than in previous decades.

Published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, the research concludes that after accounting for natural climate variations—such as El Niño, volcanic eruptions and changes in solar activity—the long-term warming trend has accelerated since around 2015.

Faster Warming Than Previous Decades

According to the study, Earth's average temperature has increased by approximately 0.35°C per decade over the last 10 years. Between 1970 and 2015, the average warming rate was just under 0.2°C per decade.

Researchers say this represents the fastest sustained warming observed since modern instrumental temperature records began in 1880.

Removing Natural Climate Variability

To better identify the long-term climate trend, scientists removed the short-term effects of natural events that can temporarily influence global temperatures.

These include El Niño, which typically raises global temperatures by releasing heat from the Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere; major volcanic eruptions, which can temporarily cool the planet by blocking sunlight; and natural fluctuations in solar activity.

After adjusting for these factors, researchers found a consistent acceleration in warming across five independent global temperature datasets, including records maintained by NASA, NOAA, HadCRUT, Berkeley Earth and ERA5.

According to the study, the probability that this acceleration occurred by chance is less than 2%, giving the findings a statistical confidence level of more than 98%.

Independent Data Show the Same Trend

Although each temperature dataset is compiled using different methods, all five showed a similar pattern.

Researchers found that the acceleration began to emerge around 2013 and 2014, becoming increasingly evident by 2015.

To verify the results, the research team used two separate statistical techniques. Both methods independently identified the same shift toward a faster rate of warming, strengthening confidence in the findings.

Study Focuses on Measuring the Trend

The researchers emphasized that the study was designed to measure whether the warming rate has changed—not to determine the precise cause of that acceleration.

However, they noted that current climate models allow for periods in which warming speeds up, meaning the observed trend is consistent with projections generated by modern climate simulations.

Implications for Global Climate Goals

The study also suggests that if the current warming rate continues, the planet could exceed the Paris Agreement's long-term goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels before the end of the decade.

Researchers stressed that whether this occurs will depend largely on future global greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide released through the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.

While a single year above the 1.5°C threshold does not necessarily mean the Paris Agreement target has been permanently exceeded, scientists generally evaluate long-term temperature trends over extended periods.

The authors conclude that the latest findings indicate Earth may now be warming considerably faster than it did during the late 20th century, underscoring the importance of continued monitoring and future research into the factors influencing global climate change.
