School districts across Southeast Texas are taking precautionary measures as Tropical Depression 5 approaches the region, bringing the threat of heavy rain, flooding and hazardous travel conditions.

Several districts announced that all campuses, administrative offices and school-related activities will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 1, as officials prioritize the safety of students, teachers and staff. The affected districts include Dayton ISD, Crosby ISD, Galena Park ISD, Channelview ISD, Sheldon ISD, Anahuac ISD, Huffman ISD and Humble ISD.

Meteorologists have designated Tuesday as a Weather Alert Day, warning that the tropical system could produce periods of intense rainfall capable of triggering flash flooding and significant travel disruptions across parts of Southeast Texas.

At this time, no school closures have been announced for Wednesday. However, district leaders said they are closely monitoring the storm's path and will issue additional updates if conditions warrant further schedule changes.

The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) has also activated its monitoring efforts as the storm moves closer to the Texas coast. Officials warn that residents should prepare for heavy thunderstorms, dangerous driving conditions and an elevated flood risk, particularly in areas near rivers, creeks and bayous.

Emergency management officials are encouraging residents to stay informed by monitoring official weather updates, enabling emergency alerts on their mobile devices and reviewing their family emergency plans before the storm arrives.

Meanwhile, CenterPoint Energy has activated its Emergency Operations Center and positioned crews in advance of the system's expected impacts. The utility company said it is preparing for the possibility of localized flooding, strong wind gusts and scattered power outages that could affect portions of the Greater Houston area and surrounding communities.

CenterPoint stated that electric and natural gas response teams are on standby and coordinating with state and local emergency officials to respond quickly if service interruptions occur.

Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant, avoid driving through flooded roadways and closely follow guidance from local emergency management agencies as Tropical Depression 5 approaches Southeast Texas.
