A California rescue organization is urgently searching for a loving family to adopt Macey, a loyal shepherd-husky mix whose life changed dramatically after she was separated from her owners during an immigration enforcement operation in Palmdale in 2025.

Now six years old, Macey has spent months moving between shelters, foster homes and failed adoptions, leaving rescuers worried about her future if a permanent home isn't found soon.

According to GSL Rescue, Macey was clearly cherished by her original family before they were separated. When she first arrived at the rescue, she appeared healthy, well cared for and had already been spayed—strong signs that she had lived in a loving home.

"She was in much better condition than many of the dogs we rescue," said Victoria Begler, founder and director of GSL Rescue. "It was obvious she had been loved."

Saved at the Last Minute

About ten months ago, GSL Rescue stepped in just hours before Macey was scheduled to be euthanized at a California animal shelter.

The rescue group hoped they had given her a second chance at life, but the road to finding a permanent family has proven heartbreaking.

Her first adoptive family eventually returned her. A second placement also ended unsuccessfully, leaving Macey once again without a place to call home.

Rescuers now say she cannot safely return to a shelter.

"Macey was previously placed on a euthanasia list," Begler explained. "If she goes back into the shelter system, there's a real possibility she could face euthanasia again."

Without a foster or adoptive family stepping forward soon, the rescue says Macey may have to remain in a boarding facility until another home can be found.

Looking for Someone Willing to Give Her Time

Earlier this month, GSL Rescue shared another appeal on social media after Macey was returned by a family who said she had urinated on their carpet.

The organization believes many adopters underestimate how much time rescue dogs need to adjust after experiencing major life changes.

"People often expect too much too quickly," the rescue wrote. "Dogs need time to decompress, learn their new environment and build trust."

A Dog Who Loves Deeply

Begler believes Macey's emotional struggles stem largely from losing the family she had known for years.

Despite everything she has endured, Macey continues to form strong bonds with people almost immediately.

"Macey is incredibly loyal," Begler said. "She wants to be your best friend the moment she meets you."

Rescuers describe her as affectionate, devoted and eager to build lasting relationships with the right family.

"If someone is willing to show Macey the same loyalty she gives so freely," Begler added, "I truly believe she'll become someone's once-in-a-lifetime companion."

For now, Macey continues to wait—hoping the next person who opens their heart and home will finally become her forever family.
