Rain Delay Ends as Detroit Tigers Finally Take the Field for Game 3 Against Mariners
DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers’ long-awaited return to Comerica Park for the 2025 MLB playoffs didn’t start as planned — thanks to Mother Nature.
Heavy rain delayed the start of Game 3 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) between the Tigers and Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, Oct. 7. First pitch was originally scheduled for 4:08 p.m., but after a two-hour and 53-minute delay, the game finally got underway at 7:01 p.m.
The matchup — Detroit’s first home playoff game of 2025 — is now being broadcast on FS2 and MLB Network. The change came after the delay pushed coverage from FS1, with the Yankees-Blue Jays game taking the primetime slot. Fans can also stream Game 3 live via the Fox Sports app.
“We’re going to play — we just don’t know when,” manager A.J. Hinch said hours before the rain delay began.
The ALDS is tied 1-1, with the winner moving on to face either the Toronto Blue Jays or New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
Before Tuesday’s contest, the Tigers battled through three games in Cleveland and two in Seattle as part of their postseason journey. Wednesday’s Game 4 at Comerica Park is currently scheduled for 3:08 p.m., but it could move to 7:08 p.m. if the Yankees are eliminated.
Detroit hasn’t played a home game since Sept. 21, and hasn’t won one since Sept. 6 — something fans are hoping will change quickly.
Starting Pitchers
For the Tigers, Jack Flaherty took the mound. The 29-year-old right-hander went 4.64 ERA with 59 walks and 188 strikeouts across 161 innings in 31 regular-season starts. Flaherty, who helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the 2024 World Series, also impressed in the Wild Card round, allowing just one run over 4⅔ innings against Cleveland.
He now has 10 postseason starts under his belt, carrying a 5.05 ERA in 51⅔ innings.
The Mariners countered with Logan Gilbert, who posted a 3.44 ERA this season with 173 strikeouts across 131 innings. This is Gilbert’s second career postseason start, his first coming against the Astros in the 2022 ALDS.
As both teams seek control of the series, Tigers fans — finally back in their home stands — are eager to roar again.
