For just the second time in the past 19 years, rain is expected on Jan. 1 at the Rose Bowl. The College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup between undefeated, top-ranked Indiana and Alabama is shaping up to be a wet one.

According to AccuWeather, Pasadena, California, will see heavy rain and thunderstorms Thursday morning, with lighter showers likely during the game. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 64 degrees. The nearby Rose Parade was placed under a flood watch through noon local time.

While the rain may pause around 1 p.m. local time, forecasts show a 50% chance of showers returning during the first half of the Rose Bowl and continuing until about 6 p.m.

Because of the heavy morning rainfall, crews covered the field with tarps and worked to clear standing water by pushing it toward the stands.

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti said he does not anticipate the weather drastically altering plans.

“If it becomes a complete downpour, that’s one thing. But I don’t expect that tomorrow,” Cignetti said during his final press conference before the game. “I don’t think it will significantly affect the game, and I don’t see it changing our game plan very much.”

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer shared a similar outlook, saying the team will be prepared to react to whatever conditions unfold.

“You just have to see what it looks like in the moment,” DeBoer said. “It might be heavy at times; it might be light. We haven’t played much in weather like this, but we’ve prepared in practice with wet-ball drills — snapping, throwing, catching — all of it. In the end, you adapt.”
