Portugal appears to be moving forward quickly following Cristiano Ronaldo's voluntary departure from the national team's training camp, with reports indicating another star is set to inherit the country's most recognizable jersey.
According to Portuguese outlet B24, Rafael Leão, who currently plays for Galatasaray, is expected to wear Portugal's iconic No. 7 shirt in the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark on Oct. 1 and Norway on Oct. 4.
Ronaldo did not feature in Portugal's recent 2-1 victory over Norway, remaining on the bench throughout the match. Following the final whistle, the 41-year-old headed directly to the dressing room while teammates celebrated with supporters. The following day, he skipped training before leaving the national team camp voluntarily, a decision that has sparked widespread discussion in Portugal.
The Al-Nassr forward later confirmed his departure in a message posted on Instagram.
"After speaking with the head coach and the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the national team camp," Ronaldo wrote, adding that he would explain his reasons "at the appropriate time." He also wished his teammates success in the upcoming matches.
Jorge Jesus Addresses Ronaldo's Exit
Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus reiterated that Ronaldo would only be used when the coaching staff believed it was necessary.
After choosing not to substitute the veteran striker into the victory over Norway, Jesus acknowledged the player's frustration but defended his decision.
"When a player warms up for 20 or 30 minutes and doesn't get on the field, it's natural that he won't be happy," Jesus said. "But that was my decision. There's no reason to turn this into a major controversy."
Despite the attention surrounding Ronaldo's departure, Portugal remains in a strong position in the UEFA Nations League. The 2016 European champions currently sit atop their group ahead of Norway and Denmark, while Wales remains at the bottom of the standings after failing to collect a point through its opening matches.
