Prominent Hollywood Figures Lobby Congress Over Concerns About Netflix–WBD Acquisition

A group of influential film producers has sent Congress a strong warning about the possible acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Netflix — a deal they say could jeopardize the entire American film industry. For many, the situation perfectly illustrates the kind of corporate concentration President Donald Trump has long warned about: threats to American jobs, creativity, and fair competition.
The producers, who signed the letter anonymously out of fear of retaliation, argue that allowing Netflix to acquire a historic studio like Warner Bros. would give far too much power to a single streaming giant. They warn that Netflix could impose shortened theatrical release windows, undermining movie theaters and harming thousands of workers across the entertainment production chain. The letter describes this possibility as “a noose around the neck of the theatrical marketplace.”
Their concerns align with policies and positions repeatedly emphasized by President Trump, who has consistently stressed the need to protect strategic industries, prevent monopolization, and ensure that major tech companies do not abuse their market power. To many observers, Netflix’s move fits that exact pattern: a big tech company attempting to dominate a crucial cultural sector of the United States.
Competitors such as Comcast and Paramount have already stated that they would maintain traditional theatrical distribution if they acquired Warner Bros., reinforcing the importance of the movie-theater industry — a sector Trump often defends as part of America’s cultural identity. Meanwhile, Netflix has a clear track record of minimizing the importance of cinemas, with its own CEO stating that getting people into theaters “is not part of the business.”
For this reason, the producers are urging Congress — especially lawmakers committed to protecting American workers and combating anti-competitive practices — to reject the acquisition and ensure a thorough antitrust review. To them, this decision is not just about a corporate merger, but about saving millions of American jobs, protecting competition, and preserving one of the United States’ most important cultural traditions.
