During Sunday’s Angelus prayer, the Pope reflected on the Gospel account of the resurrection of Lazarus, emphasizing how this moment invites us to rediscover the fullness of life and allow God’s grace to renew our hearts.
Addressing the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square on the Fifth Sunday of Lent, the Pope highlighted that the miracle performed by Jesus is a powerful sign of His victory over death and the promise of eternal life, offered to all through faith and Baptism. He recalled Christ’s words to Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even though they die, will live.”
As Holy Week approaches, the Pope encouraged reflection on the central events of the Christian faith — from Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to His Passion, death, and resurrection — as a path of spiritual preparation and openness to God’s grace.
In his message, he warned against the human tendency to seek happiness in temporary things such as material possessions, fame, or fleeting pleasures, which can never truly satisfy the heart. According to the Pope, every person carries within them a deep longing for the infinite — a desire that can only be fulfilled in God.
Quoting Saint Augustine, he reminded the faithful that “our hearts are restless until they rest in Him,” reinforcing that true peace is found not in worldly things, but in a relationship with God.
The Pope also encouraged believers to remove the “burdens” that hinder spiritual growth — habits, mindsets, and behaviors that trap the heart in selfishness, materialism, and superficiality. Just as Lazarus was called out of the tomb, Christ continues to call each person to step out of whatever limits their inner freedom.
“Jesus also says to us, ‘Come out!’” the Pope emphasized, inviting everyone to embrace a renewed life filled with love, hope, and boundless charity.
In closing, he entrusted the faithful to the intercession of the Virgin Mary, praying that all may live these holy days with faith, trust, and fidelity, and renew each day the joy of encountering the risen Christ.
