STATESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) — A plane crash at an airport in Iredell County on Thursday morning resulted in multiple fatalities, according to the county sheriff.
UPDATE: Authorities have confirmed that former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and members of his family are among those killed in the Statesville crash.
The aircraft, a Cessna C550, crashed at Statesville Regional Airport at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said six people were on board, though it was not immediately clear whether there were any survivors.
Photos from the scene show the plane engulfed in a massive fireball after crashing on the runway.
Flight-tracking data indicates that a Cessna 550 that departed Statesville Regional Airport at 10:06 a.m. is owned by a private North Carolina company. Business records show the company is affiliated with retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle.
Multiple federal, state and local agencies responded to the scene, including officials from Iredell County, the city of Statesville, the FAA, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
According to the city of Statesville’s website, the airport is owned by the city and provides corporate aviation facilities serving Fortune 500 companies and several NASCAR teams.
Statesville Regional Airport is located near the Interstate 77 and Interstate 40 interchange, about 10 minutes from downtown Statesville.
