The iconic sports documentary series “Hard Knocks” has long been praised for giving fans a rare, behind-the-scenes look at professional football. But in recent years, many viewers believe the show has lost some of the raw access and authenticity that once made it so compelling.

As NFL teams have become increasingly cautious about allowing cameras inside locker rooms and team meetings, the series has begun to feel more controlled and less revealing. The most recent training camp edition featuring the Buffalo Bills drew criticism from fans and analysts who felt the production lacked the unfiltered moments that once defined the show. Some even argued it appeared so tightly managed that it could have been produced by the team itself.

The decline in openness has sparked broader questions about whether Hard Knocks has lost the edge that originally made it a groundbreaking sports documentary. Even the offseason version of the show, which once delivered candid and dramatic moments, has yet to return after earlier seasons proved perhaps a little too revealing for teams and the league.

With interest in the NFL-focused version fading, NFL Films is now taking the concept in a new direction — into the world of professional golf.

In a surprising crossover between two major sports, NFL Films will partner with PGA Tour Studios to produce a new all-access series centered around The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour calendar. Often referred to as the “unofficial fifth major,” The Players Championship is considered the flagship tournament of the tour.

The new show, titled “Chasing Sunday,” will offer fans unprecedented access to players competing in the tournament. Selected golfers will be mic’d up throughout the week, allowing cameras to capture conversations, emotions, and decision-making moments both before and during competition.

According to the PGA Tour, the project is designed to bring fans closer to the players and the drama of tournament golf, similar to the storytelling style that made Hard Knocks a success.

A teaser trailer for the series will debut on Championship Sunday, airing across PGA Tour and NFL media platforms and featuring the full roster of participating stars. Additional announcements about the production are expected on Sunday morning, March 15, through PGA Tour channels.

In recent years, the PGA Tour has made several efforts to modernize how the sport is presented to audiences and to attract new fans. While golf documentaries have not yet reached the cultural phenomenon of Formula 1’s “Drive to Survive,” Netflix’s golf series “Full Swing” has helped introduce players’ personalities and behind-the-scenes moments to a wider audience.

“Chasing Sunday” appears to be the latest step in that strategy — offering a more immersive and cinematic look at one of golf’s most important tournaments.

It remains unclear how quickly the show will be produced and where it will ultimately air. Possibilities include HBO, which has traditionally broadcast Hard Knocks, as well as streaming platforms like Netflix or other PGA Tour media partners.

Even if the NFL version of Hard Knocks has become more guarded, the concept of sports storytelling through behind-the-scenes access clearly continues to resonate across leagues.

Ultimately, the success of Chasing Sunday will depend on how much authenticity the filmmakers are allowed to capture. If the series becomes overly polished or promotional, it may struggle to stand out. But if it delivers genuine moments — the tension, pressure, triumph, and heartbreak that define championship golf — it could quickly become must-watch viewing for sports fans.
