After dominating the world of Paralympic sports for more than three decades, Dame Sarah Storey is stepping into an entirely different arena—television's biggest ballroom competition. The British sporting icon is officially joining the cast of Strictly Come Dancing 2026, fulfilling a longtime personal ambition.

Storey revealed that participating in the BBC dance competition had been one of her goals for years, but her busy schedule as an elite athlete always prevented her from accepting the invitation. Now retired from competitive sports, she said the timing finally felt right.

"I've wanted to do this show for a long time," Storey said. "Since I've stepped away from competition, it was the perfect opportunity."

The 48-year-old will join 14 other celebrities as they begin their journey on the dance floor. During the launch episode, contestants will be introduced to their professional partners before competing in the live shows that follow.

Storey has been paired with professional dancer Julian Caillon, a partnership she says she is thrilled about as she prepares for one of the biggest challenges of her television career.

Britain's Most Decorated Paralympian

Sarah Storey is widely regarded as Great Britain's most successful Paralympian. Throughout an extraordinary career spanning more than 30 years, she captured 30 Paralympic medals, including 19 gold medals, first as a swimmer and later as one of the world's most dominant cyclists.

Her accomplishments extend far beyond the Paralympic Games. Storey is a 29-time world champion, 21-time European champion, and has set 75 world records, making her one of the most accomplished athletes in Paralympic history.

Reflecting on her career after winning two additional gold medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Storey described the feeling of victory as unmatched and said she remains incredibly proud of everything she achieved throughout her journey.

Overcoming Challenges

Storey's path to sporting greatness was not without adversity. She has previously spoken openly about experiencing bullying after becoming a Paralympic champion at just 14 years old following the Barcelona Games in 1992.

She says those experiences helped shape both her character and her determination, ultimately strengthening her resolve to succeed at the highest level of international competition.

A Second Chance on the Dance Floor

Strictly marks Storey's return to televised competition after an unfortunate setback in 2025, when she was forced to withdraw from Dancing on Ice after fracturing her ankle during rehearsals.

Despite the disappointment, she remained determined to return to entertainment television—and now has another opportunity to showcase herself in a completely different environment.

Ready for a New Adventure

Although Storey admits ballroom dancing is far outside her comfort zone, she says that challenge is exactly what excites her.

She describes entering Strictly Come Dancing as a completely different experience from elite sport, where athletes usually control every aspect of their preparation. This time, she will rely on the expertise of professional dancers while learning an entirely new discipline in front of a national television audience.

With an unmatched competitive spirit and a career built on overcoming obstacles, Sarah Storey now hopes to trade medals for mirrorball magic as she begins the next chapter of her remarkable journey.
