Nintendo Expands Mario Kart World With New Knockout Tour Routes in Surprise Update

Nintendo has surprised Mario Kart World players with a new content update for the Switch 2 launch title, introducing additional routes for the game's popular Knockout Tour mode while teasing even more content in future releases.

Available now as part of Version 1.7.0, the update adds two new rally routes: Drill Rally, which links Wario Shipyard to Bowser's Castle, and Boomerang Rally, connecting Salty Salty Speedway to Whistlestop Summit.

Rather than introducing brand-new race tracks, the update expands the Knockout Tour experience by combining six existing courses into two fresh rally challenges. Players must race across the connected stages while avoiding elimination at each checkpoint, one of the mode's signature gameplay mechanics.

Nintendo confirmed that the new routes become available after players complete at least one Knockout Tour rally.

"Additional Knockout Tour routes are also planned for future updates," the company said in a blog post announcing the latest patch.

More Content for Dedicated Players

The update gives longtime players fresh objectives to pursue after completing the original Knockout Tour challenges. Those who have already collected every gold trophy now have new events to conquer while waiting for larger content expansions.

Although many fans have been hoping for entirely new tracks, characters and karts, Nintendo's latest release signals that support for Mario Kart World remains active just over a year after its launch.

New Photo Mode Features

Version 1.7.0 also introduces a small but welcome customization feature for Photo Mode.

Players can now decorate their in-game screenshots using stickers they have unlocked throughout the game, adding a fun and creative way to personalize memorable racing moments.

No Major Changes to the Open World

While previous updates quietly refreshed certain areas of Mario Kart World's expansive world map, this latest patch does not appear to include any significant environmental changes or visual overhauls.

Instead, Nintendo has focused on expanding replayability through additional Knockout Tour content and quality-of-life improvements.

A Franchise That Continues to Evolve

Since debuting with Super Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, the Mario Kart franchise has become one of Nintendo's most successful and recognizable series.

Across more than three decades, each installment has refined the formula with new mechanics, characters and multiplayer features while maintaining the accessible gameplay that has made the series a favorite among players of all ages.

The latest installment, Mario Kart World, continues that tradition by introducing larger interconnected environments and new game modes designed specifically for the Switch 2 hardware.

Although many fans are still eagerly awaiting major downloadable content featuring additional racers, vehicles and circuits, Nintendo's newest update demonstrates the company's ongoing commitment to supporting the game well beyond its launch.

With more Knockout Tour routes already confirmed for future updates, players can expect the racing experience to continue expanding in the months ahead
