Gardner Minshew is set to step in for Patrick Mahomes this week, but the Kansas City Chiefs will be without one of their most important offensive weapons.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice has been ruled out after sustaining a concussion in last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Rice entered the league’s concussion protocol on Monday after reporting symptoms and did not practice this week. Kansas City travels to face the Tennessee Titans in Week 16.

Fellow receiver Tyquan Thornton was also ruled out due to a concussion, further thinning the Chiefs’ receiving corps.

Rice’s injury occurred in the third quarter of Kansas City’s 16–13 loss to Los Angeles, when he absorbed a hard hit from Chargers safety Tony Jefferson. The collision was the latest in a series of physical blows Rice has taken in recent weeks. He remained on the turf following the play and was evaluated in the medical tent before briefly returning to action.

Despite finishing the game with seven receptions for 51 yards, Rice later reported symptoms that placed him into concussion protocol.

Rice leads all Chiefs receivers with 53 catches and 571 receiving yards, and his five touchdown receptions are tied for the team lead.

Meanwhile, Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals has been cleared from concussion protocol and is expected to play Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Higgins was a full participant in Friday’s practice and was medically cleared following evaluation. He had not practiced for two weeks prior to returning.

The receiver missed Week 13 due to a concussion, briefly cleared protocol, then re-entered it following Cincinnati’s Week 14 game against the Buffalo Bills.
