Newly released FBI documents are shedding additional light on Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman who carried out the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024. The records provide new details about his behavior leading up to the attack but do not identify a definitive motive.
According to the federal documents, Crooks used the alias "Bob Dole" when receiving packages connected to online purchases made before the shooting. Investigators believe the pseudonym was used to conceal his identity while ordering items linked to his preparations. The records also reveal that, following his death, an anonymous donor paid for his cremation, according to information provided by the family's attorney.
The newly released files include interviews with Crooks' parents, who told investigators they were stunned by his actions. His father said his son never considered classmates to be true friends and remained socially isolated throughout middle and high school despite interacting with peers.
Investigators were also told that Crooks had become noticeably quieter during his teenage years. While his father observed that he occasionally talked to himself, he said he did not recognize signs that would have suggested his son was planning an act of violence. Crooks was described as an excellent student who earned high SAT scores and had once considered pursuing a career involving nuclear submarines.
The documents indicate that Crooks adopted the "Bob Dole" alias after his father's bank account had previously been compromised by fraudulent activity. His father told investigators the nickname was initially used as an extra layer of privacy when receiving packages.
Despite the additional information contained in the FBI records, investigators have not identified a clear motive for the attack. Officials continue to say there is no conclusive evidence explaining why Crooks opened fire during the rally, an attack that killed one attendee, seriously wounded two others, and injured then-presidential candidate Donald Trump before Secret Service agents fatally shot the gunman.
