Authorities in Arizona are treating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of Savannah Guthrie, as a suspected abduction, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.
Speaking to CBS News on Monday, Nanos said investigators believe Nancy was taken from her home while she slept.
“I do believe she was abducted,” Nanos said. “She didn’t walk away from there. She did not leave voluntarily.”
Earlier in the day, the sheriff confirmed that the case is now officially being handled as a criminal investigation. He urged neighbors to review any home surveillance footage that might capture suspicious activity.
“We observed several concerning elements at the residence,” Nanos told reporters. “After processing the scene, we’re confident this is a crime scene and that a crime occurred. We’re asking for the community’s help.”
Authorities described Nancy Guthrie as 5 feet 5 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes, weighing about 150 pounds. Nanos emphasized that she has limited mobility, making it unlikely she could have gone far on her own.
“She couldn’t walk 50 yards,” he said, adding that other evidence at the home also points to her being removed against her will.
While Nancy does not suffer from cognitive impairment, officials said she urgently needs her daily medication.
“The clock is literally ticking,” Nanos said. “It’s been more than 24 hours since she disappeared.”
He also stressed that this is not a case of wandering or confusion.
“Miss Guthrie is of sound mind — sharp as a tack,” Nanos said. “The family wants everyone to understand this is not someone who simply wandered off.”
Investigators have not released specific details about what raised red flags at the home, citing the active investigation. Sgt. David Stivers described the circumstances as “suspicious in nature.”
Nanos said there is no confirmed motive at this stage and no clear indication that Nancy was targeted because of her daughter’s public profile, though he noted that possibility has not been ruled out.
“We’ll look at everything — whether she was being watched, followed, or harassed in any way,” he said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting local authorities with the case.
Search-and-rescue teams initially worked through the night using drones, helicopters, and heat-sensing equipment. Those efforts have since shifted toward a full criminal investigation. Detectives are now reviewing security-camera footage from the home, analyzing Nancy Guthrie’s cellphone, and checking license-plate readers and nearby surveillance systems.
Neighbors are being asked to review their own camera footage, even if their cameras don’t directly face the Guthrie residence.
“You might catch something important — a person walking by, a vehicle passing through,” Nanos said.
At this time, authorities say they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the general public. The family is cooperating fully with investigators.
In a statement released Monday, Savannah Guthrie thanked supporters for their concern.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills area around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. When she failed to appear at church Sunday morning, relatives went to check on her and contacted emergency services.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
