Mitch McConnell Recovering After Medical Emergency Leads to Hospitalization
Sen. Mitch McConnell was hospitalized earlier this month following a medical emergency at his Washington, D.C., residence, according to emergency dispatch audio from June 14.
Emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the senator's Capitol Hill townhouse after receiving a report of an unconscious individual. According to the dispatch recording, responders were initially informed of a possible cardiac emergency, and emergency crews began providing immediate medical assistance upon arrival.
Later that day, McConnell's office confirmed that the 84-year-old lawmaker had been admitted to the hospital, stating that he was receiving "excellent care."
Several days later, on June 22, members of his staff provided a positive update, saying the longtime Kentucky senator continued to recover while remaining actively engaged with Senate responsibilities and matters affecting the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
McConnell has not cast a Senate vote since June 11 as he continues his recovery.
The veteran Republican has experienced several health-related incidents in recent years. In February, he was briefly hospitalized after developing flu-like symptoms before returning to work shortly afterward.
In 2024, McConnell concluded his tenure as Senate Republican leader following the election, after previously announcing his decision to step aside from the leadership position. The decision came after a series of well-publicized health episodes, including occasions in 2023 when he briefly paused during public remarks.
Earlier, in March 2023, McConnell suffered a concussion after falling during a dinner event in Washington. He spent about a week in the hospital before completing rehabilitation and physical therapy. In 2019, he fractured his shoulder after a fall at his Kentucky home, and in late 2024 he sustained a wrist sprain and a minor facial injury following another fall during a Republican luncheon.
McConnell has also previously undergone significant heart treatment. In 2003, while serving as Senate Republican Whip, he underwent successful triple bypass heart surgery and later returned to public service.
His office has not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the June hospitalization, but staff members have indicated that he continues to make progress in his recovery while remaining involved in legislative matters.
