Memorial Day will be observed this year on Monday, May 25, as Americans across the country honor military service members who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Because Memorial Day is a federal holiday, many government offices, financial institutions, and delivery services will either close or operate under modified schedules throughout the holiday weekend.

The United States Postal Service confirmed that regular mail delivery will be suspended on Memorial Day, and post offices nationwide will be closed for retail operations. Major shipping companies, including UPS and FedEx, also announced that most pickup and delivery services will pause for the holiday, although some specialty services may still operate in limited areas.

Most bank branches are expected to close Monday as well due to the federal holiday designation, though customers are encouraged to verify local branch hours before visiting.

Financial markets will also shut down for the observance. Both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will remain closed on Memorial Day before reopening Tuesday morning. The U.S. bond market will also suspend trading during the holiday.

Despite the closures, most grocery stores and major retailers are expected to remain open under regular or slightly modified schedules.

Walmart, Kroger, and Food Lion confirmed that stores will generally operate during normal business hours, though pharmacy departments and in-store clinics may adjust their schedules.

Other popular grocery chains, including Trader Joe's, Publix, Whole Foods Market, and Meijer, have traditionally remained open on Memorial Day as well.

Warehouse retailers will vary in operations. Costco warehouses will be closed for the holiday, while Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club plan to remain open with adjusted hours.

Restaurant chains are also expected to stay open throughout the holiday weekend. Popular locations such as McDonald's, Starbucks, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin', and Wendy's are expected to continue serving customers, though individual store hours may differ by location.

Experts recommend checking local business websites, mobile apps, or store listings ahead of time since holiday schedules can vary depending on region and staffing.
