“Maxx Crosby to the Cowboys? Six reasons why that idea might make more sense than it seems”

Why a Maxx Crosby Trade to the Cowboys Might Actually Make Sense
Tuesdays during the NFL season are usually quiet. No games, no chaos — just time for players to rest, coaches to regroup, and analysts to look back on the weekend before shifting focus to what’s ahead.
That calm was shattered this Tuesday when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones went on his usual radio spot, hinting that his team could explore moves before the trade deadline — but only if the deal “fit perfectly.”
“If there were a trade, it would be because it fits us,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “We’re in great shape with draft picks, finances, and cap space. If we see a chance to improve this team now and for the future, we’ll look at it.”
Then came a surprising rumor. Former ESPN anchor Trey Wingo reported that the Cowboys had inquired about Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby.
At first glance, it sounded far-fetched. Crosby, 28, just signed a three-year, $106.5 million extension — one of the richest ever for a non-quarterback — and recently suffered a minor injury. Why would Dallas target a player that expensive, older than Micah Parsons, and difficult to acquire financially?
But a closer look shows this idea isn’t as wild as it sounds.
Here are six reasons why a Maxx Crosby-to-Dallas trade might actually make sense.
1. The Cowboys Need Defensive Firepower
Since parting ways with Micah Parsons, the Cowboys’ defense has plummeted to the bottom of the NFL rankings, surrendering over 400 yards per game. Their pass rush has lost its edge — and while journeyman James Houston has filled in admirably, he’s not the kind of game-changer who can close out a win like Parsons once did.
Crosby, meanwhile, brings size, leadership, and run-stopping ability — all qualities Jerry Jones values.
2. Dallas Needs a Tone-Setter
It’s been nearly 30 years since the Cowboys last lifted the Lombardi Trophy. The franchise has the talent — Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Brian Schottenheimer — but lacks a locker-room enforcer with a relentless, “first-in, last-out” attitude.
Crosby embodies that mindset. Known for his relentless work ethic and passion, he could reignite the same winning culture that defined Dallas’ 1990s dynasty.
3. A Trade Could Benefit the Raiders Too
The Raiders are once again adrift. Despite hiring Pete Carroll, GM John Spytek, and signing Geno Smith, they’re far from competing with Kansas City or anyone else in the AFC West.
Trading Crosby — while painful — could help them reset, gain valuable draft picks, and open cap space for the future.
4. The Cowboys Have the Assets
Dallas is one of the few teams positioned to pull off a blockbuster trade without jeopardizing its future. With multiple first-round picks acquired from previous deals and over $30 million in salary cap room, the Cowboys have the flexibility to make a deal happen.
5. The Contract is Manageable
Crosby’s deal might look daunting, but structurally, it’s not prohibitive. Most of his guarantees are in base salaries rather than bonuses, making it easier for a team like Dallas to absorb. The Raiders, meanwhile, would take on a reasonable $10.2 million dead-cap hit spread over two seasons.
6. Timing is Everything
The Raiders are heading toward another rebuild. Trading Crosby now would give him a legitimate chance to compete for a championship — something he’s earned after years of loyalty to the franchise.
For Dallas, it could be the spark they’ve needed for decades. At 83, Jerry Jones is still chasing one more Super Bowl. After the backlash for dealing Parsons, a bold move for Crosby could redeem his legacy and reignite hope in “America’s Team.”
As improbable as it sounds, “Mad Maxx” in a Cowboys uniform might be exactly the move that turns Dallas from contender to champion.
