Manchester United Reportedly Closing In on Experienced Goalkeeper Karl Darlow
Manchester United are reportedly close to strengthening their goalkeeping department by signing veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Leeds United.
The 35-year-old Wales international became a free agent after choosing not to renew his deal at Elland Road, despite Leeds making several attempts to keep him at the club.
Darlow enjoyed an impressive finish to the 2025-26 campaign after taking over as Leeds' first-choice goalkeeper midway through the season. From January onward, he started every league match, helping the club with a series of consistent performances that included five clean sheets. His leadership and experience also made him a highly respected figure inside the dressing room.
Although Leeds hoped to retain him, Darlow opted to explore new opportunities as he considers the next chapter of his career.
According to reports, Manchester United have been searching for an experienced, homegrown goalkeeper capable of providing reliable depth behind the club's established No. 1. Darlow's Premier League experience and familiarity with English football make him an attractive option.
Everton and Tottenham Hotspur were also believed to have monitored the goalkeeper's situation, but Manchester United now appear to be leading the race for his signature.
Goalkeeping Changes Expected at Old Trafford
If Darlow completes the move, it could pave the way for Altay Bayindir to leave Old Trafford after three difficult seasons. The Turkish international has struggled to establish himself and has been linked with a possible move to Turkish side Besiktas.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke had previously praised Darlow's professionalism and influence while refusing to speculate publicly about his future before the season concluded.
"I have enormous respect for Karl," Farke said during the campaign. "He earned the number one role because of his performances, and the trust between us has always been very strong."
United Continue Busy Summer Rebuild
The potential signing comes as Manchester United continue an active summer transfer window aimed at strengthening several areas of the squad.
After significant investment over the past year, the club remains focused on reinforcing key positions, particularly in midfield, while also improving squad depth ahead of another demanding campaign.
Meanwhile, Leeds have already seen further changes in their goalkeeping department, with former first-choice goalkeeper Illan Meslier departing the club after falling out of the starting lineup last season.
Should the deal be finalized, Darlow would bring valuable Premier League experience and veteran leadership to Manchester United as the club prepares for the new season.
