Manchester United jumps in the standings with victory over Wolves

Bruno Fernandes scored twice to help Manchester United return to winning form, while bottom-of-the-table Wolves saw their miserable campaign continue with a 4–1 defeat on a night marked by protests at Molineux.

Ruben Amorim was frustrated after last Thursday’s draw at Old Trafford against struggling West Ham — and he would have every right to be furious again after watching his team’s first-half performance on Monday.

Fernandes gave United a deserved lead, only for some passive stoppage-time defending to allow Jean-Ricner Bellegarde to score Wolves’ first Premier League goal since Oct. 26.

But whatever Amorim said at halftime seemed to fire up only the visitors: Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount, and Fernandes all found the net in front of United supporter and world darts champion Luke Littler.

The win lifts Manchester United to sixth place, while Rob Edwards’ side remain rooted to the bottom with just two points from their opening 15 matches.

Wolves fans turned on their team throughout the evening, calling for owners Fosun and chairman Jeff Shi to step down. Many supporters even staged a 15-minute delayed entry as a form of protest.

Those present at kickoff booed every touch of former fan favorite Matheus Cunha and watched Sam Johnstone deny Diogo Dalot early on. The goalkeeper also produced a superb save to block a powerful strike from Mbeumo, as chants against the owners — including “you’ve sold the team, now sell the club” — rang around the stadium.

The home side conceded a chaotic opener in the 25th minute when André was dispossessed by Casemiro, and Fernandes — despite slipping while receiving a Cunha pass — managed to turn past Emmanuel Agbadou and squeeze a shot past Johnstone.

The crowd erupted in frustration and nearly saw their team concede again minutes later: Johnstone denied Mbeumo once more, Cunha had a shot cleared off the line, and Amad Diallo volleyed wide.

United kept pressing, with Diallo firing a deflected attempt just wide and Agbadou escaping a VAR handball check. Audible groans filled the stadium as Wolves’ toothless attack faltered — until United, sitting deeper, gifted an equalizer in stoppage time. David Moller Wolfe had plenty of space to drive a low cutback into the box, and a stretching Bellegarde finished.

It was a rare Wolves goal, and the last moment of joy they would have.

United formed a huddle before the second half, returning with renewed intensity, and took only six minutes to go back in front. A strong tackle from Luke Shaw on Bellegarde — who had to leave the match afterward — sparked a counterattack. Cunha released Dalot, who drew the goalkeeper out and squared the ball for Mbeumo to tap into an empty net.

The relief was palpable, and it grew in the 62nd minute when Fernandes lofted a brilliant ball into the area for Mount to calmly finish.

Johnstone denied Fernandes once more before both managers made substitutions, including Jorgen Strand Larsen being taken off to sarcastic cheers from the home fans — a reaction that clearly irritated him.

Fernandes had a free kick deflect over the bar, but his second goal wasn’t far away.

Yerson Mosquera was judged to have handled a Diallo shot, and after a VAR review at the monitor, referee Michael Salisbury awarded a penalty. The United captain smashed it home in the 82nd minute.

Boos greeted the announcement of nine minutes of stoppage time — even louder jeers met the final whistle.
