4.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Near Berkeley, Oakland, San Franc
A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Berkeley, in the San Francisco Bay Area.
It occurred early Monday morning at about 2:56 a.m. (local time).
The quake’s epicenter was located very close to the University of California, Berkeley campus, near Dwight Way and Piedmont Avenue, at a depth of about 5 miles (8 km).
Tremors were felt across Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, and surrounding cities.
Impacts reported:
Minor damages, such as broken windows and items falling from shelves.
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system reduced train speeds for safety inspections, causing delays of up to 20 minutes.
Many calls were made to 911, but no major injuries or severe damage were reported.
Aftershocks and risks:
At least two small aftershocks were recorded (magnitudes ~2.1 and ~2.6).
Experts state the likelihood of stronger aftershocks (above magnitude 3.0) is low but possible.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates only a 0.2% chance that this quake was a foreshock leading to a larger event (magnitude 5.0 or greater) in the coming week.
